Start up ventures to Public Limited Company, all needs clarity of operations, flow of authority, level of hierarchy, documentational flows and transparency of decision making. Development of an Organogram is as important for the Company as its products, marketing plan and long-term strategy. As a start up venture we may take an initiative by drawing few lines on a piece of paper at a kitchen table or as a public limited company we hire a consultant to facilitate the process of communication flow among and around departmental hypothetical boundaries across the organization. As we plan and discuss the product so as we need to give importance to the initial delegation of powers as an informal or a formal organizational structure. After all, the strength of a vision depends upon the initial structuring of human resources.

As we work on Company Vision, Mission and Value statements to differentiate our business from competitors so we need to clearly communicate our sturdy structure to employees who show interest and want to be the part of our Company at initial stage or at later stage of developments. In order to attract and retain talented employees in a Company, Top management has to work on proper induction of employees with clarity of employees role, reporting lines, authority to execute and documentational flows. In short, a well thought and formatted document of Organogram shall communicate its purpose and dual responsibilities of employee role as well as their subordinates.

Comprehensive Organogram has to be a reflection of Company’s Culture. Therefore, it has to relate with Company’s functional perspective. it can be formatted in different forms i.e. hierarchical, Matrix, Network, divisional, team based etc… In simple words, it shall not be just a traditional Organizational Chart but an interactive document incorporating the functional perspective of a Company in a standard format. It shall address and align the Line functions (Production) as well as the staff functions (Support). It shall help to minimize the bottleneck of information flow. further, facilitate the implementation of decisions.

In JYA perspective, a well organized Organogram shall reflect

  • the coding of departments,
  • direct and indirect reporting mechanism,
  • levels of management,
  • employee departmental information,
  • designations,
  • grades,
  • service years,
  • budgeted Human Resource vs. actual Human Resource,
  • departmental workers strength,
  • division of workers as per Govt. Gazette i.e. Skilled, Semi-Skilled, Unskilled etc..

Furthermore, it shall be reflected through the Master data of HRMS with the mechanism of being updated as and when a new employee joins the Company or an existing employee get separated from the Company.

  • It shall facilitate revision in role by giving additional responsibilities to any specific individual and shall cater multiple scenarios as per need of Company day to day adjustment in operations by adjusting the jurisdiction of a department or division so their work shall not suffer…

In short, Organogram shall be built for the distant future. it shall help in bifurcation of total management staff as well as workers strength on department level. It shall reduce poor communication due to its intricate structure.

He has done Projects with Logan Aluminum, Inc. – a joint venture of Arco, USA and Novelis Corporation, USA; Leadership strategies International, USA; Franklin Precision Ltd, USA and Western Kentucky University, USA. He has extensive experience in leading Human Resource divisions in textile Industry & senior position in FMCG & Telecom.
